Sam Newby, who goes by the sobriquet KIJI BAE, derives the name from the Korean term "gijibae," meaning "bad girl." Their artistic practice is deeply rooted in personal healing and self-exploration, often manifesting through self-portraits and imaginative depictions of their inner child. These self-portraits serve as a continual reminder of their commitment to self-love and growth, capturing both the struggle and triumph of the journey.

In contrast, their other works create a vibrant, whimsical universe where their inner child, BIMI, and her sidekick, CHICHI, are free to explore and express themselves. This imaginative realm, known as the world of Cuties, is inspired by a constant from their childhood—the bowl of tangerines their mother always kept available for snacking. Despite any turbulence within the home, these tangerines represented a comforting, unchanging presence. Through this series, Sam evokes a sense of stability and joy, mirroring the solace that these simple, sweet moments provided during their formative years.

In both their self-portraits and the world of Cuties, Sam seeks to bridge past and present, blending personal history with creative expression to foster healing and connection.
